You may try an alternative—Helicon Ape http://www.helicontech.com/ape/ It’s all-in-one solution which has a free license for 3 web-sites and provide compression/caching features (along with a bunch of others). I’m sure Ape is able to compress PHP working through FastCGI. I’ve tested it personally.
